The features a silent format structurally cannot use
Kapwing is built as a general video editor that happens to live in a browser: a multitrack timeline, audio and music tracks, transitions, templates, brand kits, resizing presets for each social platform, shared workspaces, and automatic subtitles generated from speech. That is a deep toolkit and people ship real work with it.
Now notice how much of it survives contact with a GIF. The format has no audio track at all, so music, voiceover, ducking, and every audio control go in the bin. Transitions have nowhere to live in a two second loop. Templates are shaped around social video rather than a 480 pixel loop headed for a pull request. What remains of a general editor once you delete sound is a trim tool, a crop tool, and an exporter. That is not a criticism of Kapwing, just an observation that a narrow errand handled by a broad tool means paying in interface complexity, sign in steps, and upload time for capability you cannot use.
Automatic subtitles against three lines you typed
Kapwing transcribes speech and burns the result onto the video. For a three minute explainer that is genuinely transformative, and there is no equivalent here, because there is no AI anywhere in this tool. Not for transcription, not for scene detection, not for anything.
What exists instead is deliberate text: up to three overlays per output, in a loud meme style with white fill and black outline, or a clean style with a font and color picker. Each sits top, bottom, or anywhere you drag it, and each can be timed to a slice of the loop so a label appears exactly when the thing it names happens. On a two second reaction, transcription has nothing to transcribe. On a talking head with real dialogue, Kapwing wins and it is not close. The rule of thumb is the ratio of speech to motion: words being spoken means you want transcription, a thing happening on screen means you want precise trimming and a caption you wrote.
Where the file lives while you work
A cloud editor keeps your project on its servers, and that is what makes its best features possible. Start on a laptop and finish on a desktop, hand a link to a colleague and let them comment, keep versions, and give a two hour 4K source to a render farm instead of to your own fan. Those are real benefits, unavailable to a tool that never uploads anything.
The same architecture is also the cost. Your footage sits on infrastructure you do not control, under a retention policy you probably have not read, and hosted editors have historically metered their free tiers with export limits, length caps, and watermarks. Those plans change often enough that the only reliable advice is to check their current pricing page rather than trust any comparison article, including this one.
Here the tradeoff runs the other way, deliberately. Nothing uploads, so there is no project to share and no version history to browse. There is also no queue, no plan, no watermark on any export, and no copy of your unreleased feature demo sitting somewhere after you close the tab. - Audio, in every form. Music, voiceover, levels, sync. None of it here, and there never will be, since the output formats are silent.
- Automatic subtitles. Speech to text on a long clip saves real time and has no counterpart in a tool with no AI in it.

Frame rate, output dimensions, palette size, dithering, and lossy compression each get a control, and a live size estimate recomputes from your real frames as you touch them, so hitting a byte ceiling is arithmetic rather than a lottery.
