Terms of Service

Last updated: 2026-05-01 · Free to use. You own your content.

By using What the GIF (the "Service") you agree to these terms. If you don't, please don't use the Service.

What the Service does

What the GIF is a free, browser-based tool that converts video files to animated GIFs. All processing happens locally in your browser, we never receive your videos.

Acceptable use

You may use What the GIF for any lawful purpose. You agree not to:

Your content

You retain all rights to videos you process and GIFs you generate. We don't claim any ownership over your content, and because processing happens entirely in your browser, we never receive, store, or transmit it. You alone are responsible for ensuring you have the rights to convert, copy, and use any video you process with the Service, and for how you use the GIFs you make. What the GIF does not host, store, or distribute any user content.

Copyright

Because the Service runs entirely in your browser and we never host or receive your files, there is no content on our servers to remove. If you believe the Service is being promoted or described in a way that infringes your rights, or you have a copyright concern about material on this website itself, email hello@whatthegif.com and we'll respond promptly.

No warranty

The Service is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We don't guarantee the Service will be available, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. GIF output quality depends on your browser, your device, and the input video, we make no promises.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, What the GIF and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of the Service. Total liability for any direct claim is limited to USD $0, since the Service is provided free of charge.

Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless What the GIF and its operators from any claims, damages, or costs arising out of your use of the Service or your violation of these terms, including any claim that a video you converted or a GIF you made infringed someone else's rights.

Third-party services

The Service displays advertisements via Google AdSense and is hosted on Netlify, and loads web fonts from Google Fonts. Your interaction with those services is governed by their respective terms and privacy policies.

Changes to the Service

We may update, modify, or discontinue the Service at any time without notice. We may also update these terms, the "Last updated" date reflects the most recent change.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that isn't resolved informally will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in California, and you consent to their jurisdiction. If you use the Service from outside the United States, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with your local laws.

Severability

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it.

Trademarks

What the GIF is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any other company. Product and company names mentioned on this site, including other converters and the apps and platforms our guides reference, are the trademarks of their respective owners and are used only for identification and honest comparison (nominative fair use).
