Everything except the last step already shipped with the device
iPadOS hands you a complete production line. Control Center records the screen into a .mov and files it in Photos. The Photos app trims. AirDrop pulls a clip off an iPhone in seconds without a cable in sight. Files reaches iCloud Drive, Dropbox, and whatever else you have mounted.
Then it stops. Photos will not export a GIF. Files will not convert one. Nothing Apple ships on the tablet turns a video into a loop, which is unfortunate given that a loop is what a group chat, a Notion page, or a class assignment actually wants.
Search the App Store and you get single-purpose utilities with prices attached and, increasingly, a weekly subscription for a conversion that takes eight seconds. Open a tab instead. Safari on iPadOS is a real browser with a real file picker, and the conversion runs on the tablet's own chip.
HEIC is the one format your iPad handles better than your laptop
Here is a genuine iPad advantage, and it is the opposite of what you would expect. Photos taken on Apple hardware land as HEIC, a container built on HEVC's still-image coding, and browser support for it is thin. Safari decodes HEIC natively because Apple built the decoder into the platform. Chrome and Firefox on a Windows or Linux machine generally do not.
So a stack of HEIC stills that a desktop browser refuses to open will drop straight into this tool on an iPad. Each photo becomes a five-second freeze-frame clip you can trim, and up to ten clips mix freely with video in one sequence. Live Photos are the exception with a catch. They will not import as motion directly; save one as a video in Photos first, then bring the video in. The Live Photo walkthrough shows exactly which menu that lives under.
The button you won't find on a tablet
There is a Record a Tab feature that captures another browser tab or window straight into the editor. On an iPad you will not see it, because the browser API it depends on is not available on iPadOS. The button hides itself rather than sitting there failing.
That is a real gap and worth knowing before you plan around it. Capture with Control Center instead, which produces a better recording anyway, and then feed the .mov to the converter. Two steps rather than one, on a device where both steps are easy.
The other honest caveat is the keyboard. Arrow keys are what let you creep a cut forward one frame at a time, and that is how a loop gets landed exactly on a beat. Without a Magic Keyboard or a Bluetooth one attached, you are dragging handles by finger, which is fine for most clips and imprecise for tight ones.
Memory is the ceiling, and modern iPhone footage tests it
Everything decodes inside the tab, which means the tablet's RAM is the real constraint rather than any policy. Most iPads have far less memory than a laptop, and iPadOS is aggressive about reclaiming it from a background tab.
That matters because of what recent iPhones produce. A 4K clip at 60 fps, or worse a ProRes recording, is an enormous amount of pixel data per second. Feeding twenty seconds of it into a browser on a base-model iPad is how you find the edge.
- Trim first, before touching any other setting. Ten seconds of source is a fundamentally different workload from two minutes of it.
- Downscale early. A GIF meant for a message thread wants something around 480 to 640 pixels wide, not 3,840.
- Keep the tab in front. Switching apps mid-conversion invites iPadOS to evict the page.
- Cut the frame rate. Somewhere between 10 and 15 handles most footage, and it hands the encoder roughly a quarter of what a 60 fps source would.
Files cap out around 500 MB, which is a guard against the browser falling over rather than a quota anyone is enforcing on you.
Where the finished file lands
Safari drops the export into Downloads inside the Files app, which sounds obvious and trips people up constantly because there is no Finder window to watch it appear in. From Files you can move it into iCloud Drive, attach it in Mail, or drop it into Slack, Notion, or a Google Doc through the share sheet.
Saving it into Photos is the one thing to think twice about. Photos is a video and image library, and an animated GIF put through it can come back as something other than what you exported. Keep the file in Files if the animation has to survive the trip.
And the part that does not change with the device: none of this touched a server. The recording was opened from local storage, converted by the tablet, and written back to local storage. Same page, same behavior, whether you are on the iPad, the Mac, or a borrowed Chromebook.
